The bottle of beer the bartender handed Andrew looked as if it had been recycled a thousand times; whatever logo had appeared on it years ago was barely visible in the glass.
He raised it to his lips and took a sip. Not bad for an isolated place that missed out on the microbrew revolution, he thought. Not bad at all. Though I guess everything they make here is microbrew now.
“They’re in the back,” Helen said, leading Andrew through a section of pool tables to a doorway that opened to deeper parts of the hall.
He heard yelling and laughter well before they arrived in the room with Jerry. Smoke billowed out, and as they walked in, Andrew saw that each man at the poker table had an ashtray, with a lit cigar or cigarette resting in it. There were a dozen empty beer bottles on the table, and more at their feet. Several people surrounded the table, watching the game.
One man had just won a gigantic pot, and was scraping the winnings toward him over the faded green felt of the table. Another of the men rose and wandered off. Andrew wondered if the game had ended.
“Packing it in, Glen?” the man with the winnings said, laughing. “Had enough pain for one night?”
“I’ve had enough of your gloating for one night,” another of the men replied, also rising from the table and wandering off.
“Ah, come on, Ben! The evening’s still young!”
“I’ll be back,” Ben replied. “Just hitting the john.”
The man began sorting the bills he’d scraped together. Helen approached the table, and he stopped, looking up.
“Helen?” he asked.
“Jerry,” she replied.
He leaned back in his chair. “To what do I owe this honor?”
“I need to talk to you,” she replied. “In private. It’s SCS business.”
“SCS is a public institution,” Jerry replied. “We like to be transparent in all our dealings, don’t we, guys?”
Murmurs erupted from a few of the men in the room.
“Cut the crap, Jerry,” Helen said. “There’s some shit going down, and the town needs to know.”
“What kind of shit is that?”
“We’re about to get invaded again.”
“Huh,” Jerry snorted. “That’s exactly what half of this town thinks right now; the Shepherds are on their way back, ’cause they didn’t finish the job. No revelation there. The other half think that they came and went, thanks to Reverend Hosv. So it’s fifty-fifty who you want to believe.”
“What do you believe?” Helen asked.
“I think Hosv’s plan played a role in it,” Jerry replied.
“This temperature rise is part of a new invasion,” Helen said. “The first wave already happened, and the second is imminent.”
“Really? A first wave? I didn’t see anything. When was that?”
“It was when the Shepherds were here. It’s what scared them off.”
“You think that’s why they left? They were scared off?”
“I know that’s why they left.”
“How? How do you know?”
“I talked to one of them. One of the new invaders.”
“Really? Is that one of them, your silent boyfriend there?”
“His name is Andrew. He saw him, too.”
“She’s telling the truth,” Andrew offered.
